Navy Veteran finds joy and healing as a MyHealtheVet volunteer

Emerson Beach was shot in the head twice while serving in the U.S. Navy. Against all odds he survived, earned a degree and worked as an electrical engineer for 20 years. But then he started having seizures. The brain surgery he needed left him unable to work and emotionally devastated.

One of Beach's doctors suggested that he try volunteering at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston, South Carolina, to help lift his spirits. He did, and it worked! Now, Beach has been helping other Veterans register for and use My HealtheVet for the past five years.

"I needed to do something meaningful, and I feel like I add value by helping Veterans sign up for My HealtheVet," he says.
