VA’s National Remote Temperature Monitoring (RTM) program is providing lifesaving preventive care to more Veterans than ever. To date, over 8,100 Veterans with diabetes have received RTM services in one of 158 participating VA locations.
The program features a Podimetrics SmartMat, which uses thermal imaging to measure the temperature of a Veteran’s foot each day. It then automatically sends the temperature reading to the Veteran’s VA clinic and a Podimetrics staff member.
The mat can detect temperature changes in the foot up to five weeks before a diabetic foot ulcer appears. This means that Veterans can begin treatment interventions early and avoid complications from diabetic foot ulcers that can lead to amputation.
