The Virtual Diabetes Optimization Program (VDOP) at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center uses VA Video Connect, Fitbits, apps, and other virtual care tools to make a difference for local Veterans struggling with Type 2 diabetes. The program is seeing great success, with Veterans lowering their A1cs and weight, weaning themselves from insulin, and enjoying the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
“My whole life has changed,” said Veteran Dan Merritt, 63, who saw his weight drop from 250 pounds to 187, while his A1c fell from 9 to under 7. “I’m super happy. I will stay healthy longer.”
The program brings together a multidisciplinary team of health professionals — a doctor, occupational therapist, dietitian, and pharmacist — to work intensively with Veterans to improve physical activity, dietary habits, and medication regimens. The all-virtual program ranges from 12-24 weeks, and Veterans meet regularly with the VDOP team over VA Video Connect to formulate their personalized plan to better control their diabetes.
