Clyde Jackson, a U.S. Army and Vietnam War Veteran, has been managing his health care with VA Impaired Vision Services for ten years. He works with Kim O'Connell, a Vision Impairment Services Outpatient Rehabilitation (VISOR) Computer Access & Technology Specialist at the Richmond VA Medical Center, who teaches him about technologies that can help. Four years ago, she recommended that he learn to navigate My HealtheVet.
"It was easy to create a My HealtheVet account and intuitive to use with my screen reader," Jackson said. "I have been using My HealtheVet ever since."
My HealtheVet is compatible with optical devices, computer assistive technologies and non-electronic handheld models. Jackson uses many of the health care management website's features, including Secure Messaging, with the help of a Job Access With Speech (JAWS) screen-reader.
"We are truly lucky to have Kim O'Connell as a resource for our facility," said Gwendolyn McMillian, Richmond My HealtheVet Coordinator. The two often work together to support blind and low-vision Veterans who want to sign up for a My HealtheVet account and learn how to use it.
