OpenNotes reaches 10 million patients

OpenNotes is a national movement that invites patients, families and clinicians to come together and improve communication through shared clinicians' notes and fully transparent medical records. In early August, VA announced 10 million Americans, and more than three million Veterans, can now read their medical notes online using secure patient websites.

VA expanded patient health record access in 2013, offering VA OpenNotes through their Blue Button tool and is one of the first health systems in the country to do so.

"VA patients tell us that having copies of their visit notes is a powerful communication tool, and provides them with greater control of their care," said Susan Woods, MD, MPH, and Director of Patient Experience in the VA Office of Connected Care.
